FROM LAST TO LEGEND: SERGIO PEREZ AT SAKHIR

The 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix was a race that seemed destined to be remembered for Mercedes’ pit-lane meltdown, but it ultimately belonged to Sergio “Checo” Perez. On a night under the Bahrain floodlights, Perez proved why he is known as the “tire whisperer,” delivering a performance that redefined the concept of a comeback.

The Lap 1 Disaster

Starting from 5th, Perez’s race nearly ended at Turn 4 of the opening lap. Involved in a multi-car collision with Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, Perez spun into the runoff. While Leclerc and Verstappen were forced to retire, Perez limped back to the pits with a flat-spotted set of tires. He rejoined the race in 18th and dead last.

The Charge Through the Field

What followed was a display of relentless efficiency. By Lap 20, Perez had already fought his way back into the top ten. Utilizing a brilliant one-stop strategy, he stayed out longer than his rivals, maintaining blistering pace on aging tires that others would have discarded. By the middle of the race, the “Command Centre” telemetry showed Perez as the fastest man on track.

The Maiden Victory

The turning point came when a botched double-stack pit stop and a subsequent puncture crippled the dominant Mercedes of George Russell. Perez, who had worked his way up to 1st, suddenly found himself leading a Grand Prix with 24 laps to go.

Despite the pressure of a charging field behind him, Perez remained ice-cold. He crossed the finish line to secure his first-ever Formula 1 win in his 190th race start—the longest wait for a maiden victory in the sport’s history.
