Reading the Traces
To understand why a driver like Verstappen or Hamilton is faster, you must look at the Overlay Telemetry.
- Brake Trace: Top drivers use “Trail Braking,” slowly tapering off the brake pressure as they enter a corner to keep the nose of the car pinned to the apex.
- Throttle Trace: A “stepped” throttle application indicates a driver struggling for traction, whereas a smooth, linear climb shows a car that is perfectly balanced.
The Human Sensor
While the car provides millions of data points, the driver’s Physical Telemetry is just as vital. Heart rates often exceed 170 BPM while sustaining 5G lateral forces in corners like Copse or Eau Rouge.
